Curtin’s newest CBD location awarded highest sustainability rating

We’re incredibly proud to announce that Curtin’s premises at 137 St Georges Terrace has been awarded a 6 Star Green Star – Interiors rating by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

The GBCA assessed the sustainability outcomes of interior fit-outs across nine categories, including management, indoor environment quality, energy, transport, water, materials, land use and ecology, emissions, and innovation.

Sustainability features included at the premises have reduced energy consumption by 49%, lowered greenhouse gas emissions by 47% and cut light energy consumption by 73%. Water efficient fixtures and fittings have also been installed, reducing the building’s water consumption by 38%.

Curtin was the first Australian university to be awarded a 6 Star Green Star - Interiors rating for its adjacent property at 139 St Georges Terrace, housed in the Old Perth Boys’ School. The certification highlights the University’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact across its campuses.

GBCA’s CEO, Davina Rooney congratulated our achievement saying:

“We commend Curtin University for its continued leadership and attaining world-leading standards with its fit-out at 137 St Georges Terrace.”

“This is a tremendous project which underscores that the benefits of sustainable building can apply to fit-outs of historic buildings such as this one, as well as new builds. Most importantly, it shows not only a commitment to a better future but also to delivering the best possible environment for the University’s students, staff and visitors,” said Ms Rooney.

We are continually striving to be a leader in sustainability, working with leading sustainability stakeholders and consultants to reduce environmental impact whilst ensuring all new buildings and retrofitting of existing buildings adhere to the Curtin University Sustainable Building Design Guidelines.
