Our Projects

Teaching and Classrooms Upgrades

Project overview

There were over forty existing buildings at Curtin’s Perth campus of varying age and condition that required extensive refurbishment. This is why we initiated the Transforming Learning @ Curtin project to revitalise the spaces across our campus and bring them into a contemporary learning environment. Our aim was to take these existing spaces and roll-out a refurbishment that would allow staff and students to use them more often and longer.

Project features

The project provided technology-rich spaces across the campus with three broad audio / visual classifications:

This type of space caters for collaborative learning with flexible arrangement of furniture and power / data services located at the perimeters of rooms. Learning facilitators are provided with a podium PC, data projectors and screens / whiteboards to share content.

To extend the 'Flexible Spaces', we added centralised Group PC and docking areas for group activities. This meant that the overall room flexibility was retained with its flexible furniture arrangement that allows for 'pods' to form around the docking areas, or changed into other room configurations if desired.

For a truly immersive collaborative learning experience, these rooms contain fixed camera directional pods positioned to support an enriched distributed learning experience.

Project benefits

Along with the immediate benefits of providing engaging spaces that can be adapted to the learning experience desired, this program contributes towards Curtin's Strategic Plan 2013-17 Teaching and Learning objective of 'providing a richly interactive and personalised learning experience'.
